Local - Gainesville
ACLU of Florida presents: "Two Americans"
Home, sweet (local) home…
We recently met with K to discuss a fun community project. During our meeting, K was explaining how much Gainesville felt like home and couldn’t stop singing its praise. We asked K to put this into words so we could share this with you all, and K kindly (and promptly!) did.
Thanks for the kind words on making Gainesville home, K And thank you for making us your home; we, too, are so glad you are here!
This June will mark the one-year anniversary of our move to Gainesville. Collectively, B and I are are from all over — Texas, Massachusetts, NYC, Maine, North Carolina, plus short stints in Paris, Puget Sound, Minnesota, Colorado.
We have had the good fortune to travel all over the world, alone and together.
It normally takes awhile for a new place to feel like home, if it ever does. But moving to Gainesville has been different.
It somehow feels like we’ve always lived here — and as a place-centric urban planner, this is a huge statement. Gainesville has a remarkable openness, an inherent welcome that even surpasses other college towns from our past. With growing careers and two small children, we are ready to set down deep roots. We feel deeply fortunate to be able to do so here.
In the meantime, stay tuned for some news about this collaborative project!
"Searching for Sugar Man"
P { margin-bottom: 0.08in; }A:link { }
“Searching for Sugar Man” is a Swedish-British documentary film directed by Malik Bendjelloul, which details the efforts of two Cape Town fans in the late 1990s, Stephen 'Sugar' Segerman and Craig Bartholomew Strydom, to find out whether the rumored death of American musician Sixto Rodriguez was true, and, if not, to discover what had become of him. Rodriguez's music, which never took off in the United States, had become wildly popular in South Africa, but little was known about him there.
Runtime 86 minutes.

Music with cicada chell (Lars Din's new project) and Rob McGregor
cicada shell, a three-piece string band from Gainesville, FL, plays acoustic roots music. Song-writer Lars Din may be best known for serenading north Florida audiences with his acoustic guitar and songs like "Gossip Is The Devil's Radio" and "Floodplain, FL." An accomplished song-writer -- for Dirty Fist! -- Chelsea Carnes brings a cartload of instruments to the cicada shell sound: banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and even penny whistle.
Rob McGregor played with several of the underground bands that were part of the emergence of the Gainesville, Florida music scene. He is a veteran of acts such as the Moles, the Boozers, Noise 13, Tone Unknown, Grain, and The Damn Wrights.
McGregor is also known as a recording engineer and/or producer to many emerging and legendary bands such as Hot Water Music, Whiskey and Co., Rumbleseat, Radon, As Friends Rust, Asshole Parade, Against Me!, and Grabass Charlestons. He will be playing a set of punk country rock.

Of course, there are thousands of other reasons to eat locally. But if you’re reading this site, we’re willing to bet you’re a big supporter of independent businesses, including supporting local food sources.
Feel free to share with us how you support local food sources. We can’t wait to hear from you and we’ll see you later today at Union Street Farmers Market, rain or shine!

Citizens Co-op presents: "Ingredients"
At the focal point of this movement, and of this film, are the farmers and chefs who are creating a truly sustainable food system. Their collaborative work has resulted in great tasting food and an explosion of consumer awareness about the benefits of eating local.
Attention being paid to the local food movement comes at a time when the failings of our current industrialized food system are becoming all too clear. For the first time in history, our children’s generation is expected to have a shorter lifespan than our own. The quality, taste and nutritional value of the food we eat has dropped sharply over the last fifty years. Shipped from ever-greater distances, we have literally lost sight of where our food comes from and in the process we've lost a vital connection to our local community and to our health.
A feature-length documentary, “Ingredients” illustrates how people around the country are working to revitalize that connection. Narrated by Bebe Neuwirth, the film takes us across the U.S. from the diversified farms of the Hudson River and Willamette Valleys to the urban food deserts of Harlem and to the kitchens of celebrated chefs Alice Waters, Peter Hoffman and Greg Higgins. “Ingredients” is a journey that reveals the people behind the movement to bring good food back to the table and health back to our communities.
Runtime- 73 minutes

Gainesville Citizens for Alternatives to the Death Penalty presents: "West of Memphis"
P { margin-bottom: 0.08in; }A:link { }
A new documentary written and directed by Academy Award nominated filmmaker, Amy Berg (“Deliver Us From Evil”) and produced by first time filmmakers Damien Echols and Lorri Davis, in collaboration with the multiple Academy award winning team of Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, “West of Memphis” tells the untold story behind an extraordinary and desperate fight to bring the truth to light; a fight to stop the State of Arkansas from killing an innocent man.
Starting with a searing examination of the police investigation into the 1993 murders of three, eight year old boys, Christopher Byers, Steven Branch, and Michael Moore, in the small town of West Memphis, Arkansas, the film goes on to uncover new evidence surrounding the arrest and conviction of the other three victims of this shocking crime- Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley. All three were teenagers when they became the target of the police investigation; all three went on to lost 18 years of their lives-imprisoned for cimes they did not commit.
How the documentary came to be, is in itself a key part of the story of how Damien Echols' fight to save his own life. The film reveals how close he, his wife Lorri Davis, along with his legal team, friends and supporters, came to losing that battle. But as Echols, who spent eighteen years on death row, himself has stated “... in the face of such horror, in the face of resounding grief and pain, you cannot give up … you must never give up.”
